Course description

The Gender and Development course explores poverty, livelihoods, and development through the application of a ‘gender lens’ an exploration of theoretical and practical analyses with an emphasis on intersectionality. We look at and beyond the donor-led approaches to see where there are opportunities for addressing gender equity challenges. Gender analysis frameworks are applied to case studies through interactive problem-based learning approaches in small groups throughout the seminar.

This course will be taught in English, and all assessments and presentations are also expected to be done in English.

 Learning objectives

The Gender and Development course aims to achieve the following learning objectives:

■      Understand key issues surrounding gender and social inclusion within the field of international development from a political science perspective.

■      Understanding of how men’s and women’s lives in less developed countries are impacted by development through an exploration of the theoretical basis and case studies related to gender.

■      Familiarity with approaches, tools, and frameworks used commonly in International Development to examine, challenge and question gender norms and power relations.

■      Ability to communicate about the importance of gender and intersectionality, and engage in a critical analysis of gender in a project. 

■      In-depth exploration and presentation of one aspect related to gender and development (final paper).
